Open House: Sean Michael Designs Manhattan Project

Sean Cowan and his partner Eric Silvestri’s masculine, sophisticated Edgewater Beach apartment is one of the many spectacular spaces featured in the July / August issue of Chicago Home + Garden (on sale now). From the eclectic mix of furnishings to the taupe-black-white color scheme to the intellectually quirky collection of science and religious art, Cowan’s apartment is one I could easily move into and live comfortably without changing a thing. But as the Manhattan apartment he created for a busy financial services executive shows, Cowan’s no one-trick pony. In contrast to the moody ambiance he created in his own space, the Sean Michael Design founder transformed his client’s boring one bedroom apartment into a light and airy space with contemporary furnishings and high-end wow features, including a Maya Romanoff Ajiro Diamond wood veneer wallpaper print in the master bedroom and custom Tai Ping rugs in the living room and den. As of this writing, new flooring is about to be installed and Cowan’s client is very pleased with the result. It’s easy to see why.

Cowan often designs custom pieces for his clients – like this daybed, which sits on a custom silk rug from Tai Ping.

  1. Rugs are to die for and that flying saucer poof is gorgeous!

  2. I enjoyed the latest Chicago Home & Garden and Sean and Eric’s place is one reason why it was the best issue I’ve seen. Sean is a wonderfully talented designer – hope to see more of him in the future.

  3. A trifle too drab in colouring for my taste, but I can see why it would suit two young men. I wish fellows would incorporate more blue into their decor. Associated with guys since the first male was born, and has lots of shades that are not girly.

  4. Like a beautiful, calm, hotel. I’d totally swipe that pumpkin-esque ottoman!

  5. This apartment is for a very sophisticated NYC female client of mine. It suits her personality. Blue for boys? Should all girls incorporate pink into their decor? I don’t believe in sexism or stereotypes when it comes to color palettes. It’s always entirely up to the client and what they most feel comfortable living with.

  6. I’d swipe that “poof”.
