My Favorite Room (Now a Contest!)

How exciting is it that The Painted Lady is sponsoring a Strange Closets contest? This one’s easy. Just e-mail a photo of your favorite room (or area within a room) to strangeclosets at yahoo. Then I’ll post them, readers will vote for their favorite and the winner will receive any one item priced under $100 at The Painted Lady. Entries are due by next Friday, the 25th. Readers will vote the week of the 28th, and I’ll announce the results soon after. Please don’t make me beg! I’ve already received a few entries, and they’re great. It’s going to be really fun. Thanks for participating, and good luck.

p.s., here’s my favorite room (or rather, part of a room)

I’m not eligible, but here’s my entry anyway (above). I really like this end of my long, living room. While I know the whole Craftsman fireplace with two windows yada yada yada is so ubiquitous in Chicago, I still dig it. Don’t get me wrong, I recognize that the room has its problems. The big club chair is over scale for the space. Or at least over scale in comparison to the vintage French bistro table with the white marble top, which I bought from my friend Jeanne Steen, who owns Figaro Antiques. But it’s comfortable, and in fact, it’s where I’m sitting as I type this sentence, the laptop propped on the oversized arm. I recently replaced the beige nightmare of a rug with a black and white cowhide that’s not at all plush but somewhat more stylish. The lacquer box on the table is from Pacific Connections, and I really like their stuff. Finally, I bought all the lamps with the exception of the glass one from Andrew Hollingsworth. The glass one was a $15 find at the Chicago Antique Center on Lincoln Avenue. This explanation? Priceless. Your turn. E-mail me. strangeclosets at yahoo. And I’d love to hear why you like it, but that’s optional.

  1. Don’t forget – I’ve got dibs on that $15.00 lamp if you ever get rid of it!

  2. Oh No You Don’t Aunt Pat!
I’ll never call you Tater Tot again if you pass it my way :)
By the way….that’s one beautiful room you got there, Tate – LOVE IT!

  3. Hi, Tate! This room is fine just as it is, and … is it the PRIZE in the contest? I’d LOVE to win it, although I have no idea where I’d put it. I don’t think the club chair is too big; it looks just right. (Forget the lamp, I’ll take the chair and ottoman.) The built-in bookcases are my next favorite thing. Excellent finish on the floor, too. Did you do that yourself? Good work — I can see why you love this space.

  4. Thanks Carol, Paula and Mom. Yes, I had the floor refinished, although I wish I’d gone with a darker, less orange-y stain now. Ah well, hindsight is 20/20.

  5. You didn’t specify–our favorite room in our house, or our favorite picture of any room anywhere?

  6. Hey Tasha, it’s your favorite room in your own home. Sorry for the confusion.

  7. I simply love Paula’s kitchen–none better.
