This Week: Schumacher (Plus: tabletop entry sneak peek)

My friend Geyer sent me this gorgeous tabletop image, and I couldn’t love it more. Geyer’s tabletop has a traditional foundation, but the accessories make it rock and roll cool. The stunning reflective interior of those black lamp shades adds glamour and sex appeal, and the art adds a very cool, contemporary touch. But I’ve received a number of tabletop pics from readers, and they’re all great. In fact, I’m just as excited about the really messy, kitsch-y ones (which make me feel better about my own unfortunate pile-up). So email me your tabletop pic by April 30th for a chance to win a copy of A Very Modest Cottage. strangeclosets at yahoo. And then come back here the first week in May to vote for your favorite. But speaking of Geyer . . .

Many of you may know Geyer from his position at Schumacher. Schumacher has a reputation as a fine purveyor of more traditional print fabric and wall coverings, and some mistakenly believe its offerings are a bit old-fashioned. But despite being founded in 1889, the company has stayed relevant by continually innovating, staying ahead of trends and collaborating with designers such as Trina Turk, Jamie Drake and Kelly Wearstler, whose collection might have been my favorite (a shocker) when I visited their Merchandise Mart showroom recently. And any company that carries a line of peacock feather wallpaper is beyond awesome.

“I plucked each and every one myself!” At least that’s what I’d tell the guests.

Love it or hate it, such a wall would make one eye-popping statement. And there are a million other amazing and spectacular options. (I lost time). Like Geyer’s tabletop, Schumacher has a traditional foundation, but its products and continued innovations add the cool. Schumacher sells to the trade, but if you’re a designer or you’re working with a designer, I highly recommend you visit Geyer at Schumacher. He’s a very nice fellow who knows his stuff. Thanks Geyer!

Don’t miss Artropolis, a series of events, which includes the International Antiques Fair at the Merchandise Mart from April 30th to May 3rd.

And yes, lamps too.

Here it is again. Folks. Brilliant. (But difficult to photograph, so please cut me a little slack).

  1. I have to say, Guyer… your tabletop is LUUUUSH. Love the print, the color scheme, the composition. And- I think that you have the coolest job in the universe. (jealous)

  2. Oh, my, now here are people who know how to lay out a sample room. Love the textured chair and the mirror-topped table.

You need to come up to Toronto, Tate, and visit CornerStone Furniture in the west end, near where I used to teach at an international school. Their lamp wall was quite stunning. I have a photo of it, which if I get my act in gear, I can scan in and send to you.

My favourite purchase there was the miniature Eiffel Tower, done in cast iron. At least it was till the top part of it fell off my shelf one day and conked me smartly on the top of my head… no, no, really, I still love it. It’s in 2 parts because you can put a tea candle in the base and illuminate it from within. Does Schumacher’s carry any unique accessories like that?
