Ingo Maurer in the Window (a Sir Tathum Chadwick Mystery)

Going for a long walk on a summer evening makes me happy for all the reasons you might expect: the slight endorphin rush, the smell of Lilacs and the chorus of crickets. But perhaps equally enjoyable is walking past all the beautiful homes at a time when most are nicely illuminated from within. Please don’t misunderstand, it’s not polite to stare, and it’s downright illegal (and awfully uncool) to even watch. I’m talking about a moment, the  two or three seconds it takes to pass by. Or a fraction of that when driving, as I found out earlier tonight when I caught a quick glimpse of this Ingo Maurer chandelier hanging in an otherwise neo-minimalist apartment. The overhead lights were blazing, and I believe I saw somebody looking at the barren white walls. And I think there was another person, but that might have been a different apartment in the same building. It’s a blur. Maybe he/she/they were just redecorating, but I’ll bet they’re unpacking their new apartment. If so, they’re off to a good start. Um, welcome to the neighborhood.
