Open House: Designer Tom Ferguson’s Chicago studio
After we met at his and James’ Buchanan, Michigan second home, interior designer Tom Ferguson inviited me to visit his office, which offers an excellent example of how traditional elements can be incorporated into less than traditional spaces such as this exposed brick loft. Tom’s work is really quite sublime, and it’s difficult for me to figure out exactly what he’s doing that I like so much, but I think the answer is everything. Or rather, everything sans gimmicks – no hooks, no decorative spin. The sum’s greater than the individual design elements, because the scale is right and so too are the colors, fabrics and accessories. So there’s nothing even the tiniest bit off-kilter in Tom’s spaces, nothing that needs a punch of color (or even a pop). Aw shucks I’ll say it already. I’m a fan. Thanks Tom!

If I ever have the chance to hire a designer to redo my home, Tom is the one I would call. I think he and I would be a perfect fit.
Thanks for the swell comment Ma.
