This Week: Da Barn (New Buffalo, MI)
Harbor Country, Michigan’s a tough place to leave, especially on a perfect sunny September Sunday. After spending two summer’s worth of near perfect weekends in the area, I’ve come to associate New Buffalo and the surrounding towns with stunning natural beauty, amazing antique shops and interesting people. And frankly I enjoy the delusion, which is why it’s so important to get out of Dodge promptly after the festivities (the drive of shame).
But then I passed Da Barn, and I was a goner.
Da Barn owner James Maroney has grouped his merchandise by color into boutique-like islands, which at first struck me as a bit gimmicky, deliberately quirky. But doggone it if I didn’t look at each and every item in that big ol’ barn, and ultimately, I concluded that there are far worse ways to merchandise a showroom. I just about went crazy when I saw the black and white area, but don’t let me influence you one way or another. As an added bonus, it’s a cinch to dash in and out of Da Barn if you know you need a 60′s-era olive green kitchen appliance (for example).
Da Barn offers a delightful retail experience, and I believe you may enjoy it quite a lot yourself, so please do drop in for a visit the next time you find yourself in the area.

The American flag with all those cans = Sweet!
Love the color groupings!
Unique idea, thanks for another delish post! That green dresser is by Simmon’s Furniture co. often mis attrib to bel Geddes (who did design SOME pcs for Simmons) and sometimes seen stripped down to bare metal, but always a useful and welcome addition to a home.
The Texas State Hospital ordered most of their furniture from Simmons so we are fortunate in having lots of it around.
Thanks Elle. I really appreciate your note and comments. Thanks for reading from Austin, Texas. I’m going to walk into your store and say hi one of these days.
E, he made that after September 11th. Nice huh? Hope you’re well. Any good news to report?
