Open House: What’s James wearing?
“What are you wearing now?” I write in an e-mail to interior designer, blogger and today’s Open House star James Andrew. I’m wearing a pair of jeans, a t-shirt and my loafers, and I’m hoping the What Is James Wearing? blogger will cop to wearing something equally sloppy (but I already know he won’t).
James does not look like a stereotypical blogger; he’s a dashing almost old fashioned fellow, soft spoken and gentlemanly with friends of all ilk and an openness to new people, ideas and opportunities. He’s equal parts Gatsby and Mame with a liberal helping of Deepak. Except of course, he’s none-of-those things. He’s James, and he’s an original.
He started What Is James Wearing as a way to show prospective clients his overall aesthetic and influences. Every day he posts a photo of himself dressed in designer duds with spectacular Manhattan sites as a backdrop. Along the way, he developed his voice and realized he could help promote the people he worked with, primarily fashion designers, small boutique owners and photographers. To use one of James’ terms, the result is super fabby, and I’m not the only one who thinks so.
What Is James Wearing is now read in more than 95 countries, and he’s featured in July’s issue of Elle Decoration (the UK edition), which says What Is James Wearing is their “favorite blog of the moment and possibly all time.” Paper Magazine’s Peter Davis says, “How self-indulgent and fun!”
Continued . . .
No stranger to press, James’ first became known for his elegant Murray Hill apartment, which has been featured in Elle Decor and Russian Elle Decor. It’s easy to see why; the living room’s blue-gray walls and neutral fabrics provide an ideal background for James’ silver and shine (and everything fine). All rooms lead to a stunning lacquered library/dining area with a ceiling covered in silver holographic vinyl; it’s the bling every apartment needs to make it look pretty.
But clothes and apartments are just stuff; as James points out, it’s what our stuff says about us that makes it interesting. “A person’s space is a reflection of who they are and where they are in their lives,” says James whose space and especially his art, reveal a man who loves his life and his Whippets, Rupert, 15, and Nigel, 12. Basically, he’s saying, you are where you live. Hmm. While I agree, I think people usually say, you are what you wear. Or is it, you are what you blog? Ah, it doesn’t matter. Besides, if you’re authentic to yourself and to the world, all three hold true.
It looks like James replied to my email, so let’s see what he’s wearing.
I’m wearing a Gucci black linen denim jacket with black suede elbow patches a Balenciaga black and white micro stripe shirt with a draw string neck, black Diesel skinny jeans, a Yves saint laurent blue black and grey silk paisley and camouflage pocket square, a Gucci braided black leather belt and Dior silver leather sneakers.
Hey, that sounds amazing. Thanks James!
