Antiek, that’s Dutch for antique.  Just typing those letters in that particular sequence gave me a funny feeling.  First things first, if this is your first time here, welcome to Strange Closets.  Welcome. One more time (say it with me folks), WILKUM! It feels good to say it out loud doesn’t it?

I hope you’ll stay awhile, participate in our nice community and perhaps even tell a friend.  You can rest assured that I’m here at Mission Control (Granted I have a cocktail in one hand and my mobile in the other, but I showed up darn it!) making sure things go as smoothly as possible.  Design is a harry business; sometimes it’s ugly, real ugly.  Threats are made.  People are taken out (if you know what I mean).  Affairs occur with a fair amount of regularity.  I’d like to offer you a safe haven, but I can’t.  It roils actually, the sea in which you now find yourself.  But if you make it through the churning waves and the rain pelting your face, you’ll emerge . . . uh, scathed frankly (I shan’t sugar coat it).  My posts are bound (or will be no doubt – har, har) to elicit at the very minimum, some eye rolling (this sentence for example).

Are you ready to get started?  Cool.

Q.)  What’s the biggest thing going this weekend?

A.)  I’m glad you asked buddy, because there’s big stuff happening this weekend.

Jayson Home + Garden is having their Spring Flea Market, which is going to be chock-full of antiques culled by the amazingly cool, intelligent and creative Jayson Creative Director Caroline Scheeler and her right hand man, the ever-dapper man about town Devin Kirk.  The dynamic duo traveled all over the world and returned with amazing pieces from Argentina, Belgium, France and several US regions.

Cute too!

I’m supposed to tell you that the first 150 people to arrive there Friday morning get a free gift, but how dumb do they think I am?  Game on* folks.  I don’t care who I have to sleep with, I’m getting one of those gifts.

As an added bonus, I’ve elected to give you the option to make this a musical montage (a Strange Closets first).  Shhh, don’t cry pretty people; de nada.  If you haven’t yet, it’s not too late.  Simply play the song located to your right on the sidebar for instant added resonance.

The only scene I don’t have is the old standby; Caroline and Devin get separated after having a big fight about whether or not peacock feathers will be the next hot design trend (for example).  Later Devin, alone, cold and hungry, walks along the railroad tracks carrying his satchel while Caroline, alone, reading Strange Closets and taking a hot bubble bath in first class, travels past in a speeding train, neither seeing each other of course.

* I can’t emphasize it enough.

A big thank you to Abbe MacLise, Jayson’s spectacular PR person.  No offense to anybody in PR, but getting a press release doesn’t always excite me, and I can’t really run sale listings unless there’s some kind of story attached.  Abbe dropped some tantalizing hints about some cool travel photos.  I enjoyed getting a behind the scenes look and I thought you might too.

  1. This is a great article! I love JHG– always has the best finds in Chicago. Thanks for the great photos. I sure wish I could go shopping with Devin and Caroline!

  2. When I was in Mexico recently I found these amazing Argentine fashion magazines from the 40′s which were amazing. I can’t even imagine how many incredible treasures they came across. I can’t wait to visit. If you come across interesting photos let me know :)
