Trend Report: Who Likes Owls? (Me Neither)

Owl plates at Jayson Home & Garden. Look at the talon candlesticks. Cool way to interpret birds.

Oh c’mon, I’m just kidding (sort of), but I hope this trend doesn’t endure as long as the bird trend (and yes, I know owls are birds in real life but design and reality are like religion and science).

Speaking of our fine feathered trends, a little birdie landed on my shoulder to tell me something, but unfortunately for him or her, my shirt was woven from a catnip-polyester blend, which resulted in a sad ending for that particular (and seemingly neverending) trend. One can dream.

But now owls. Sheesh. Why not raisins? They’re just as abitrary as owls (but tastier).*

Red Balloon in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood.

Johnathan Adler. Thoughts on Adler?

Room Service in Chicago’s Andersonville. If you’re going to go retro for owls, they carry the real thing.

I know what this looks like, but this isn’t the legendary Sitting Sideways Albino Luminescent Owl. It’s more of a technical difficulties situation.

The Marshall Field’s on State Street. I don’t care what it’s called now.

Sean and Eric’s. I plan to work their hallway into at least one post a week for the remainder of the year.

Anthropologie

I predict this will be very hot next year at this time. It’s all about exposure.

I don’t mean to offend, but…owls are weird. Real owls are especially weird, because when I see them, they seem to be watching me. Then they fly away like they are going to tell whatever it is that they saw. Shivers…

You want some owls? I got yer owls right here!

    OMG they’re so terminally cute!!

  3. Live owls? Love ‘em. Facsimilies from glass, pottery, or lawn clippings (yes Pottery Barn, I’m looking at YOU) give off a very grandma feel.

I can take or leave Adler – the textiles are nice but the bric a brac doesn’t do much for me.

I’m pleased to have found a kindred raisen hater (except plain – plain raisens are fine). My motto had long been, “Raisens ruin everything, bacon (and/or butter) make it better.”

  4. Hmm, there seems to be a debate shaping up.

Also, Paula, steel yourself; raisins are poised to be the next mushroom in design. I’m seeing the signs.
