Open House: Dan’s Happy Humboldt Home
When the kind Dan Devening, a busy artist / professor / gallery owner agreed to a Strange Closets Home Tour, my vestigial tail started wagging (or trying to), because I knew the space would be cool.
Why did I suspect such a thing? Here’s the thing about artists that I admire. Many of them don’t make very much money, but nearly all of them are avid art collectors, preferring to buy a true original and support one of their own. Dan’s no exception; when he bought the unit in December 2005, he turned a rather average space in a new construction condo building into a mid-century showroom that is indeed filled with art – art and stories. There’s the one about the $150 that he paid for a dining table and five Cherner chairs. Yea, right. (Good one, Dan, but we’ve all heard that urban myth.)
Continued . . .
While I enjoy eclectic interiors, Dan’s purist mid-century decor was a breath of fresh air with interesting color choices, enviable pieces and quirkly accessories. Because he bought the space from the developer, Dan was able to choose his finishes. I especially love the kitchen backs splash and the stacked gray tile that covers the fireplace surround – much more interesting and modern than a tradtional mantel.
Dan teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and owns an art gallery, Devening Projects + Editions. You can see for yourself that he has a good eye, so drop by the gallery sometime and check out some of the artists he represents.

Lots of cool stuff, artfully arranged, love the furniture, too. I’d like to visit him and walk around his place looking at everything and picking things up.
