Open House: George and Sonari’s Southside Bungalow
George and Sonari’s home is nearly indistinguishable from its neighbors. The brick bungalow, which is located on Chicago’s far south side, illustrates the extent to which appearances can be deceiving and offers evidence that if you dig deep enough, there’s a story waiting to be told – an adage which Sonari, a producer for NPR, knows very well.
The couple’s overall aesthetic does not cleave to tradition but is nevertheless informed by it, the classic coexisting with the contemporary seamlessly. The home has been decorated with a luxurious palette of neutral grays, creams and chocolates accentuated by bold colors – lime green in the combined living and dining room, tangerine in the extra bedroom currently being used as a den.

The living room, although smaller by contemporary standards, has been furnished with a sofa, two white linen chairs and a small club chair upholstered in mohair, all anchored by a chocolate and cream geometric rug that George purchased inexpensivly at CB2.
The surprises continue at the rear of the home; previous owners added a sunken addition with dramatic vaulted ceilings, an architectural detail to which George brought attention with a grouping of mirrors that flank an oversized cabinet and cover much of the wall. Once again,
George uses the room’s scale to its full advantage.

It’s here that George and Sonari watch TV and read – when they’re able. Sonari’s beat is politics, and he lives primarily in Washington D.C. now, although Barack Obama’s candidacy for president has enabled him to spend more time in Chicago while covering the campaign.
I’ll bet I know who George voted for.

* If you have this rug in 5 x 8 or you know where to get it, please e-mail me. Or just send it to me, that’s fine too. Or, perhaps Madeline Weinrib will re-create this for me since CB2 no longer carries it?

Amazing! My wife and I give it 2 thumbs way up. The back room with the 2 white (square) chairs and the bedroom are the favorite.
Good job!!!
I’ve been to his store before and I was amazed with his vision and talent. I can see his talent is not limited only to his store. Great job George!!
