This Week: Post 27

Post 27, which recently opened in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood, offers an eclectic mix of mid-century furniture and accessories at affordable prices and joins a group of like-minded enterprises such as Scout, Room Service, Mod Life and Arthur Swirgon Ltd.

The cavernous loft-like space offers a nearly big box shopping experience without the bad lighting, cheap merchandise and mildly sick feeling that often accompany such excursions (aka the Target Sickness).

Continued . . .

Instead, Post 27 offers a number of interesting and well-balanced vignettes, each punctuated by a pop (or pops) of color that perfectly balance the cool concrete floors and brick walls. Co-owners, Finney and husband, Barkley Hoffman, are focused on delivering interesting pieces vs. those designed by the Eames of the world (so you might actually find something unique, a task made much more difficult by companies like Design Within Reach, which celebrate both design and too often, ubiquity.)

Coming soon to Post 27, “In House,” a line of furniture, lighting and accessories designed by Finney, who formerly designed such items for the legendary, Holly Hunt. The new line, which will be manufactured locally, will eventually grow to include pieces by other local designers. A showroom that sells vintage and locally-made goods? What could be greener than that?

Post 27 is located at 1819 West Grand Avenue. For questions, e-mail info@post27store.com or call 312-829-6122.

P.S.

The first person who can guess (guess, not already know, Angela) what Post 27 means wins $25 toward their first purchase at the store courtesy of Strange Closets.

Subscribing is really quite easy, and it will help you in the following two ways.

First, you’ll be helping to support me, which will make you feel good.

Second, you’ll be continuing your design education. As a result, your home will be more beautiful, you will be more relaxed, your blood pressure will remain low and the cumulative effect on health care costs will be significant. This means we may have social security a bit longer, and someday you might actually be able to retire.

You may find yourself drinking less, which means more health benefits (losing weight, etc.) and you can save the money you normally spend on Grey Goose Dirty Martinis.

Plus, you will be the really laid back, cool person with the great pad and you know what that means? Exactly. Here is the subscription box. Just pop in your email and then validate it (which validates me, which I need).

  1. I need that yellow chair (third photo) in my life post haste.

Re: Target Sickness. That is the story of my life. While I will read on design blogs that they found some totally amazing, well-constructed piece at Target for the price of a box of Wheat Thins– I was a little fortunate to run across my $19 clear acrylic lamp– I rarely have the same luck.

Still, for all of my hesitation to buy stuff at Target (i.e., the things you mentioned: bad lighting, cheap merch) I have come across quite a few “boutique” decor stores for which you get similarly poor quality but with higher prices and comparably superior ambience.

P.S.– To what does your P.S. refer? Did I miss a contest?

  2. Shawn, I’m with you; that yellow chair is so awesome. Curiously enough, I often don’t notice the things I like when I’m there, discovering them instead when I review the photos. I remember “seeing” the yellow chair (of course), but I didn’t really notice it as the incredible piece that it is.

  3. P.S. – What does Post 27 stand for?

  4. Ted Harris ! That’s my answer. I’ll bet I’m right. Please send $25.

  5. Where’s my money?
